You thot I was going to “review” a musical, huh? It is old, but not a musical…
Gone with the Wind (1939) ****
Now I have the Blu-ray edition and boy, just on the cinematography grounds when 1939 rolls around, you have to stand up a clap! Sure, I can see things that are “wrong,” but think, it is 1939, give them a break, allow for discoveries.
This is almost 4 hours long, thus the plot. At that time in 1939 the Margaret Mitchell novel was the number one seller. Yes, women turned those pages faster than any man, but it was the number one seller for a reason! Selznick, the producer, saw every aspect through, from the choosing of the actor, to the direction and even directed some film while the director was there. Yes, it was the time of producers early on in the history of cinema, but Selznick went through a lot before the cameras started rolling. And boy, it shows. This is a Selznick picture.
I watched the documentary and would encourage you to do the same. You'll be glad you did.
Oh, as of the writing of this “review,” Olivia deHaviland is still living (I think over in France is where she lives). I think now she is a Christian. During the 1980s she came and saw the art museum at Bob Jones University (quite a good museum too).
(Remember, I once attended BJU and my sister teaches there even now.)
