Reviews: Pure swashbuckling joy. It has pirates, duels, double-crosses, villainous villains, a great will-they?-won't-they? romance, Basil Rathbone as a scurvy villain and of course the drop-dead-gorgeous charms of Errol Flynn. Yes, it's in black and white. Yes, the modeling work is obvious. But the plot, which is faithful to the book (also well worth a read), acting and enthusiasm of all concerned make it every bit as compelling as its technicolour descendants.
It could be bettered - but only by the original theatrical release (which is around 20 minutes longer) on DVD. |
